Helium INDUSTRIAL HELIUM GAS Interesting Facts & Information About Helium (HE) Helium is a highly specialized product. It’s chemically inert and non-flammable, with high thermal conductivity, low molecular weight and size, and the lowest boiling point known. Helium is often extracted from the earth crust where it is available in huge amounts. During the drilling process while extracting other natural gases or oils, Helium also comes out of the earth’s crest and then it is further separated and converted into liquid Helium through fraction distillation technique from natural gas. Further liquid Helium is converted in helium gas to store in cylinders for industrial uses. Helium is found largely in the minerals of thorium and uranium. Helium gas is used in wide applications in aerospace, automotive, healthcare, electronics and other related industries. Application of Helium (HE) USES OF HELIUM GAS AND LIQUID HELIUM (HE) BY INDUSTRY Diving Breathing Mixtures In combination with oxygen, helium is used in diving to help eliminate nitrogen narcosis, reduce breathing resistance at depth, and shorten decompression stops. Welding Processing Helium’s inert properties at arc temperatures make it an ideal gas for welding materials with high heat conductivity such as aluminum, stainless steel, copper and magnesium alloys. Healthcare Services Helium is used to achieve cryogenic temperatures of -451 degrees required for superconducting magnets in MRIs and NMRs, allowing the capture of high-resolution images of internal organs. Leak Detection (HE) diffuses through solids 3x faster than air, so it is also used for leak detection purposes in high-vacuum and high-pressure equipment. Electronics Helium plays a significant role in the manufacturing of semiconductors, LCD panels, and fiber optic wire. Scientific Uses Helium reduces the distorting effects of temperature variations between the lenses in telescopes.
